When other treatments

haven't held.

Shockwave therapy works differently from most pain treatments — not by masking discomfort, but by stimulating the tissue itself to repair. If you've been dealing with stubborn pain that keeps returning despite doing everything right, this is worth understanding.

How it works

Shockwave therapy — what it actually does

Most pain treatments work by reducing inflammation or blocking pain signals. Shockwave therapy works at a different level — it delivers targeted acoustic waves directly to damaged tissue, stimulating the body's own repair mechanisms where they've stalled.

The result is actual tissue regeneration — increased blood flow, collagen production, and cellular repair in the treated area. For chronic conditions that haven't responded to other approaches, this mechanism is often what was missing.

Why it works when other treatments don't

Chronic soft tissue injuries often become stuck in a low-grade inflammatory state — enough to cause pain and limit function, not enough to trigger active healing. Shockwave disrupts that pattern by creating a controlled microtrauma that restarts the healing cascade. It's not managing the problem. It's addressing the biology underneath it.

What to expect

A first visit that takes time to understand your situation

01

We listen to your history first

Before anything else, Dr. Dow wants to understand what's been going on — how long, what you've tried, what helped temporarily, what didn't hold. Shockwave isn't appropriate for every condition, and we won't recommend it if it isn't right for yours.

02

A thorough evaluation

We assess the affected area carefully — range of motion, tissue quality, pain patterns — to confirm shockwave is the right tool for your specific situation and to identify the precise treatment zone.

03

Your first shockwave session

The treatment itself takes 10–15 minutes. Most patients describe the sensation as a deep pulsing pressure — noticeable but well tolerated. Many notice a change in their pain level immediately. Some take a few sessions. We'll tell you honestly what to expect for your situation.

04

A clear picture of next steps

We'll walk you through what we found and what a realistic treatment course looks like — including how many sessions, how often, and what outcomes are reasonable to expect. You leave with real information, not a folder of pamphlets.

An honest note

What shockwave can and can't do

Shockwave therapy has strong clinical evidence behind it — particularly for tendon injuries, plantar fasciitis, and calcific conditions. For the right patient with the right condition, results can be significant and lasting.

It isn't a universal solution. Some conditions respond better than others. Some patients see dramatic improvement after one or two sessions. Others need a full course of treatment. A small percentage don't respond as expected.

We'd rather tell you that honestly before your first visit than oversell the outcome and underdeliver the experience.

Dr. Dow

Shockwave Therapy — Dow Chiropractic & Acupuncture, Madison WI

Most patients who find their way to shockwave therapy have already been through a lot — physical therapy, cortisone injections, anti-inflammatories, sometimes surgery. What brings them here is usually the realization that those approaches managed the pain without resolving what was causing it. Shockwave gives us a tool to work at the tissue level — to actually restart healing in areas that have been stuck. The $37 first session exists so you can experience that approach directly before deciding anything further.

From patients

Common questions

Is shockwave therapy painful?

Most patients describe the sensation as a deep pulsing pressure — noticeable but well tolerated. The intensity is adjustable and we work within your comfort level throughout the session. There are no needles or injections involved.

FAQ image

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on the condition and how your tissue responds. Some patients see significant improvement after one or two sessions. Most chronic conditions respond best to a course of 3–6 sessions spaced about a week apart. We'll give you an honest estimate after your evaluation.

FAQ image

Is there any downtime?

Generally no. Some patients experience mild soreness in the treated area for 24–48 hours — similar to post-exercise soreness. Most return to normal activity immediately.

FAQ image

Is there any commitment required?

None beyond the first session. After your evaluation and first treatment, we'll recommend what we think makes sense. What you decide to do from there is entirely up to you.

If you've tried most things,
this is worth trying.

The first session is $37. No deadline, no pressure once you're here. If after your visit you don't feel like this is the right fit, you're under no obligation to continue. We'd rather earn your trust than fill a schedule.
